ERP helps you gradually face the thoughts, feelings, and situations that trigger anxiety—without relying on compulsions to feel relief. Over time, you can build confidence in handling uncertainty and take back space in your mind.
Exposure Response Prevention (ERP)
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is one of the most effective treatments for OCD. It helps you understand the cycle of intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and compulsions—and begin changing how you respond to it. Rather than trying to get rid of every uncomfortable thought or feeling, you learn that you can handle them without letting OCD take over.
Facing your Fear, at Your Own Pace
Together, we’ll gradually practice facing the thoughts, situations, sensations, or uncertainties that OCD tells you to avoid. At the same time, we’ll work on resisting the compulsions you usually use to feel better, such as checking, seeking reassurance, researching, repeating, avoiding, or mentally reviewing. We move at a pace that feels challenging but manageable, and you’ll always understand why we’re doing what we’re doing.
Over time, ERP helps your brain learn that anxiety can rise and fall on its own—and that you don’t have to obey every alarm OCD sends you. The goal isn’t to never feel anxious or have an intrusive thought again. It’s to feel more confident living with uncertainty and to have more freedom to focus on the people, experiences, and choices that matter to you.
